Two kind-hearted mountain climbers were resolved to save a dog who was reportedly pleading for help close to the summit of a challenging Colorado mountain.
The Journey to The Top Of The Mountain
Trinity Smith and Sean Nichols set out in search of the dog after reading accounts from other climbers on 14ers.com (a website for climbers and enthusiasts of mountains with at least a 14,000 foot elevation) of a weeping puppy reported near the summit of Mt. Bross — and located her!
The two ascended for several days while continuously shouting for the dog. They finally picked up a faint bark. The starving dog was clinging to a big boulder when Nichols came across her. He grabbed her and slid down the slope carrying her on his lap.
Chloe the Lost Dog Found
Chloe, a 14-year-old dog who had been lost for more than a month, was finally located and rescued by the climbers after numerous ascents of the 14,177-foot Colorado summit.
Facebook Account Posting
Climber Trinity Smith posted this amazing account on Facebook:
“We own her!” After hours and hours of shouting and climbing, Sean Nichols and I were able to bring this sweet, scared, and hungry girl down to safety. The infant had been imprisoned up there for more than a month. Chloe’s owners waited anxiously after her return to see if this was actually their dog, who had been missing for six weeks had gone off with another neighborhood dog. After a month of searching, they came to the conclusion that their 13-year-old child was deceased. (This is the dog that was recently overheard sobbing on BROSS/Lincoln.)
Two Dogs Ran From Their Home
Near Breckenridge and Alma, her family had been searching for her for almost six weeks. Chloe, a healthy 85-pound senior dog, ran away from her home with another dog on August 10. Chloe had not returned, but the other dog had.
The Rescue of Chloe the Dog
Chloe was only 26 pounds when she was rescued after spending more than a month stuck on a rock.
Larry Osborne, Chloe’s owner, hurried to meet the climbers after learning of the rescue in the hopes that the dog they’d saved was in fact his missing pup. When her rescuers showed up at a nearby shop in town to buy food for the dog, he was eagerly anticipating the magical reunion.
Chloe’s Whereabouts
Chloe went to the vet with Osborne. She’s doing well despite all that’s happened to her, including losing more than 60 pounds. Chloe is now at home, where she is sleeping, eating, and interacting with her family.
Gratitude from the Climbing Community
The climbing community owes Osborne a debt of gratitude for hearing Chloe’s cries for help and persevering until they located her.
It’s a really tight-knit community, but Osborne told 9News that it’s comforting to know that despite all the bad, there is still a lot of good. So, I’m incredibly grateful to those folks.
